Who Ya Gonna Trust?

Scripture: Psalm 37:1-4

Props: Group needs to be fairly close together with an open area close to them, preferably not between them and the congregation.

Who will volunteer to help me out?  I need someone who is very trusting.

[Better to choose one of the older children for this demonstration.  Have volunteer stand away from group facing them.]

If I asked you to close your eyes and then fall backward would you do it?  What would happen if you did?  Go ahead and close your eyes real tight. [Have a couple of the kids silently move around behind the volunteer] Now what if I told you there was someone back there to catch you?  That’s still a little scary isn’t it? [Join the kids and all of you put your hands firmly on the volunteers back for support] Now that you can feel that there is really someone back there to hold you up do you feel any better about letting go? [Have a good grip in case the volunteer decides to lean back.]

OK Let’s all sit back down.

Our Bible verse for today says that we should always trust God.  Sometimes things don’t go the way we think is best even when we try to follow God’s way.  And we see people who don’t seem to us to be doing what is right and they are having all the good things happen to them.  But our verse says that we should keep doing what we know is right in God’s eyes and not worry about the other people.  We should trust that God is going to take care of us in the way that He knows is best for us.  God is with us even when it seems like we are all alone.

Just like _______________ was able to feel a little better once (s)he could feel that we were really back there, people who are having a bad time can feel God’s presence better if we are there to show them His love and support.  We can all feel His presence more if we have the touch of friends close to us.

So we need to remember God is there for us and trust Him.  We need to be there for other people who need our help and support.

Prayer: God, thank you for being there, especially when we feel like we’re all alone.  Help us remember that you will not leave us.  Help us to trust you.  Help us to reach out and help other people when they need your love.  Amen.
