Scripture: Psalm 139: selected verses

Props: A bucket of coarse sand and a picture of an endless beach

Could He?  Would He?

Who can count to a billion?  Well, then, who can count to twenty?  Fine.  Will you count out twenty grains of sand from this bucket for me, please?  That’s not a very big pile of sand is it?  How long do you think it would take to count all the sand in this bucket?  How about all the grains of sand on this beach?  Do you think any person could know how many grains of sand are on all the beaches of the world?

The Bible tells us that God knows.  The fancy adult word for that is omniscient.  That means that God knows everything.  That is the point of our scripture verse for today from Psalms. (Read scripture verses)

Sometimes we adults say we believe God knows everything but we don’t live as if we believe it.  We let a little thing bother us because we don’t think it’s important enough to pray about.  We try to make God little like we are, and we forget that He is all around each of us all the time.  He knows every time we sit down and every time we get up.  He knows every thought we think, good or bad.  And when we try to put limits on God, then we don’t trust Him to watch over us all the time.  We think we have to try to take care of ourselves without help.  And that is often when we get ourselves in trouble.

Do any of you remember the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego?  There was a king before Jesus’ time who ordered everyone in his kingdom to worship a gold statue.  Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego knew God had said that we should worship nothing other than God, so they refused.  And the king said he would burn them up in a furnace if they didn’t worship the gold statue.  Well Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego knew God had the power to save them even from the heat of the furnace.  They didn’t know if He would, but they knew He could.  And they told the king that.  When they weren’t burned up in the furnace, the king was surprised and knew that God was powerful.  So from that time on the king believed in God and not in the gold statues.

If we trust God to be with us and help us all the time, with little things and with big decisions, then we will show other people around us that God is able to help them, too.

Prayer: God who protects us and knows everything about us, help us be the kind of people that show others how good You are.  Make us remember that You do know everything about us and still love us.  Forgive us for the times that we have not trusted You.  Amen.
