I know many parents use the holidays as a teaching moment to instill in their children a desire to give back. Here are some ways that can be accomplished, some of which you may not have thought of.

  1. Allow your child to buy a new toy to be given to Toys for Tots
  2. Volunteer to serve with your child at Feast of Plenty
  3. Participate in Angel Tree with your child
  4. Help your child fill and wrap a shoe box for Samaritans Purse
  5. Ring bells (and sing carols) with your child for Salvation Army www.registertoring.com
  6. Make sure your child gets to church every Sunday
  7. Volunteer with God’s Open Arms at the fairgrounds on Christmas Eve

Also, a few creative ways to bless another family at Christmas.

  • Encourage a church small group or employee group to sponsor a family
    • Collect money to pay some of their electric or heat bill
    • Collect money to pay part of their rent
  • Take the risk of inviting them to go to a restaurant with your family
  • Spend time to visit someone in a nursing home and ask about their family
  • Serve with one of the homeless meal providers
    • Jesus Love You Ministry
    • God’s Open Arms

We can help make the connection to a family for you. These are just a few examples of the many outreaches in Hancock County.

Salvation Army starts ringing bells this coming Friday. This is the only source of funds for the Hancock County Unit and the money raised stays here in Hancock County.
